An Historic Treasure Ready for Its Next Chapter
From its humble beginnings in 1880, this property has long been a cherished jewel of our town, ready to shine once more.
Originally part of the Herbert & Co. enterprise established to serve the gold miners of the era, Archibald McKinlay constructed ‘The Sycamores’ in three stages, making it a beloved landmark that has woven itself into the fabric of our community for generations.
Currently a private residence, this historic home has worn many hats over the years. It has served as the stately abode of one of Central Otago’s most influential businessmen, a manse for the Presbyterian Church, and a welcoming B&B.
As you step through the front door, you are welcomed by stunning leadlight windows flanking the entrance, a grand hand-carved staircase, and soaring ceilings that evoke the charm of a bygone era.
When Rolf and Kathleen took on this property a few years ago, they fell in love with the vibrant community and the lifestyle that Lawrence offers.
Just an hour from the bustling towns of Alexandra and Dunedin, Lawrence embodies the charm of village life. Nestled along the picturesque Clutha Gold Trail, it is steeped in history and marked by a profound sense of community.
Regular community events create a vibrant atmosphere that not only celebrates the unique spirit of the town but also fosters a sense of belonging.
These events encourage collaboration among local organizations, schools, and businesses, promoting a sense of pride and a commitment to the future. These gatherings enhance the quality of life for residents whilst inviting outsiders to experience the warmth and charm of Lawrence.
Kathleen recounts a touching story of when she broke her leg and the community rallied around her, tending to her garden throughout the summer. “It’s this spirit of togetherness and genuine care that makes it hard for us to consider leaving,” she said.
“We cherished our time as hosts when we operated as a B&B, but post-COVID, our priorities have shifted, and family beckons us back to the North Island.”
Lovingly preserved over its 140-year history, the house has been modernized while retaining its rich character. Featuring 7 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, and a separate toilet, along with formal living and dining rooms adorned with polished kauri floors, this home also includes a modern office in the converted maid’s quarters and a cozy open-plan family room and kitchen—perfect for gatherings.
Modern updates, such as an upgraded radiator system, improved electrical works, and two heat pumps in the upstairs bedrooms, ensure comfort, while the refreshed veranda invites leisurely afternoons with a cuppa and a chat.
With fireplaces gracing every room and intricate decorative ceilings and chandeliers throughout the public spaces, the grandeur of this home is undeniable.
This property is eager for its next chapter, whether that means reopening as a B&B to host future guests or becoming the lively heart of a growing family. If you’re seeking a change of pace and a sense of belonging, this historic treasure is not to be missed.
Brought to the market by Shelley Krieger of Harcourts Balclutha, the property is available by enquiries over $1.35m plus GST if any, and viewings are welcome.
